“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.”

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.” Deuteronomy 30:15

I think the saddest story I’ve read this week is of the millennial couple that refused to believe evil existed and decided to show the world that jihadi Moslems are just people, so they rode their bikes near ISIS territory — and were promptly slaughtered.

But wait… all we need is love, right? Apparently not. Let me show you that along with love we need TRUTH as well.

Now I fully believe that Moslems are human, but I also know that their religion orders them to kill me as an ‘unbeliever’ and therefore even though I see them as God’s creation I also see them as dangerous to my life and limb, especially those determined to see me submit or die according to their religious beliefs. This young couple had believed a lie, the lie that all people are ‘God’s children’ and all we have to do is love them and everything will be peachy.

Before we go any further, since I am a ‘word nerd’ and love the study of etymology, let’s look at the meaning of the word ‘religion’.

The word religion comes from the Latin and while there are a few different translations, the most prevalent roots take you back to the Latin word “Re-Ligare”. “Ligare” means “to bind” or to “connect”. Adding the “re” before “ligare” causes the word to mean “Re-Bind” or “Re-Connect.”

So basically a person’s religion is their way of trying to reconnect with their Creator God.

Unfortunately many ignore God’s outstretched hand reaching for them via His Son and keep trying to reconnect their own way. Which is why we have so many ‘religions’ and brings us back to the need for TRUTH as well as love.

Mankind trying to find God in his own way leads not only to error but to the evil that ‘religion’ has wrought in the world…such as ISIS. Islam claims to have received God’s word via the angel Gabriel, this, however, is an error if you bother to read the scriptures of ‘the people of the book’ as Moslems refer to Christians and Jews.

Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

One would think if we truly wanted to reconnect with our Creator God we would seek to do so according to HIS WILL not our own. sigh…

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

But alas, people are stubborn and insist on doing things their own way.

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools…

I frequently read comments by atheists that ask how a loving God can or would allow evil in this world so I would not say that atheists are ignoring evil. However, I do think they are naive in that they ignore God’s remedy for it. Their questioning of God about evil in the world always makes me wonder if they’re willing to give up their free will to reduce evil in the world.

Should God forbid us from acting on our own desires just so evil is lessened in the world? Oh wait, He did. He gave us the Law and the Prophets and the Writings to teach us how to live and thereby reduces evil in this world. And that Word was rejected and disobeyed by the very people God chose to deliver it to the human race, Israel. If Israel would rebel and disobey after seeing the miracles of God it is not surprising when modern day atheists scoff at God’s instructions on what to do about evil in this world.

Proverbs 15:12 A scoffer does not love one who reproves him, He will not go to the wise.

So how did God deal with evil? As He promised in that Law, and by those Prophets, and in those Writings, He sent His Son to conquer evil by living without sin, dying in place of us in our sin, and rising to live victorious over sin and offering us this same victory if we would only believe on Him as Savior and King.

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit…

Unfortunately, evil loves to twist the words of the prophets and the requirements of the instructions within the Law. People still prefer to do it their way. But for those who honestly seek the TRUTH God opens the understanding of their spirit and God Himself reconnects with us via His Son Jesus.

Ignoring evil is not the answer either, as we can deduce from the fate of this naive millennial couple. if they had not ignored the warning in God’s Word that man’s heart can be very evil without the Truth, perhaps they would be alive today.

Evil is not ‘God’s fault’. It is a result of man’s choice so long ago in the garden, and all his choices down through the ages, to do things his way instead of God’s way.

Jeremiah 17:9-10
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

Yes my little social justice warriors, evil is very real. Evil is the absence of God in man’s heart and soul. Evil happens in the human soul when GOD is first set aside, then rejected wholeheartedly. It happens when a man chooses to worship at the altar of another god and not the Creator God who made him. The only way to FIX this evil in the world is through the God who created the world and us in it in the first place.

Matthew 7:7-14 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; to him that knocketh it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

1 John 5:10-15 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
